Coldest temperatures this winter recorded in Taivalkoski

Despite lengthening days and intermittent signs of spring, Tuesday night saw the coldest temperatures of the winter recorded in north-east Finland.

The mercury hit -38.2 degrees Celsius in the village of Taivalkoski. That beats the previous record of -36.1 degrees, which was recorded in Utsjoki, Lapland.

Temperatures were low across the north of Finland, thanks to the polar vortex that is currently extending winter’s icy grip deep into the months normally associated with warmer weather and melting snow.

Wednesday night is also expected to be cold, with temperatures hitting 20 degrees below zero in places.
