The largely environmentally-focused Greens party has seen its voter approval rating rise with the installation of a new chair, according to a fresh survey by largest circulation daily Helsingin Sanomat.
According to the HS poll, the Greens enjoyed the backing of 13.4 percent of voters in early December compared to 12 percent back in October.
At the same time, voter support for the largest opposition party, the Social Democratic Party, dipped slightly by one percentage point to 21.4 percent. However the SDP remains the country’s most popular political party among voters.
The HS poll echoes the results of a political barometer released by Yle last week.
Meanwhile approval for the senior government partners -- the National Coalition Party led by Finance Minister Petteri Orpo and Prime Minister Juha Sipilä’s Centre party – inched up to 19.4 percent and 15.6 percent respectively.
The changes in voter approval for the major parties occurred well within the poll’s two-percentage-point margin of error.
Pollster Kantar TNS conducted the voter survey for HS by performing phone interviews of nearly 2,300 respondents between November and December. The margin of error with regard to the largest parties was +/- two percentage points.
