The disputed pulp mill in Kemijärvi, Lapland, has shut down. The final batch of pulp from the Stora Enso mill rolled off the production line on Sunday afternoon, ending 43 years of industrial production in the town.
Of the mill's 225 employees, about 30 will transfer to other Stora Enso mills in Kemi and Oulu.
A grassroots organization in the town plans to block moves to dismantle the plant. The city of Kemijärvi has asked the government for permission to expropriate the plant. The cabinet is to consider the application on Wednesday. There is also a proposal to begin manufacturing glued laminated timber at the plant.
