A 36-year-old dolphin named Veera has given birth to a female dolphin calf at the Särkänniemi theme park in Tampere.

Staff at the attraction say the birth went normally and both mother and baby are doing well. The calf’s father is a dolphin called Leevi.

Following the birth, the dolphinarium has been closed to outside visitors in order to give Veera and her new arrival a chance to rest.

The attraction has come under widespread criticism from animal rights campaigners, including the then environment minister Ville Niinistö, who have called for the facility to be shut down and the dolphins released back into the wild.
