Easter Trolls Seen in Ostrobothnia

Trolls and witches were out and about in traditional style throughout Ostrobothnia and other Swedish-speaking areas on Holy Saturday.

They are said to predict bad luck in cattle raising by removing hides and hair from animals.

Easter bonfires were ignited in central and northern Ostrobothnia to ward off the trolls.

Dressing up as trolls and collecting sweets door-to-door has been a favourite Easter tradition among children in western Finland since the 1800’s, similar to Halloween trick-or-treating elsewhere.
