Finland ready to send observers to Syria, if asked

Finland is ready to consider participation in an international observers' mission aimed at returning stability to the situation in Syria.

The Foreign Ministry says Finland backs UN efforts to bring peace to Syria. However, so far, no formal request has yet been received to supply observers. If asked, the move would require a political decision here, as well.

An advance UN peacekeeping team arrived in Damascus on Thursday to negotiate the deployment of an unarmed UN observer force in Syria.

Finland already has peacekeeping troops on duty in the Middle East as a part of the United Nation's Truce Supervision Organization.
