Finland set to defend world cheerleading championship

The Finnish national team placed first in the semi-finals making them well-placed for victory as they head into Friday's finals.

Finland made it to the finals on Thursday in cheerleading and cheer dancing Cheerleading World Championships taking place in Orlando, Florida. Finland is the reigning cheerleading world champion.

The Finnish women's team won the women's cheerleading semi-final with a 3.5-point lead over the US team, which came in second. Norway placed third in the semifinal.

"We’re very happy to be in first place. Tomorrow (Saturday) we'll head into the finals feeling confident," said the women’s national team coach Maria Wahlroos in a press release.

Cheer dancers also in finals

In 2018 Finland's national cheerleading squad won the ICU World Championships in Florida, which was the first time that a country other than the US took home the title.

Finland’s cheer dance team came in second place and will also advance to the finals that take place on Friday.
