Finland sixth in new OECD school rankings

New education rankings from the OECD put Finland in sixth position worldwide—the top European country and the first non-Asian country in the list.

Finland’s success in international rankings of education systems continues on Wednesday, when the OECD published a new 76-country study. Finland is in sixth position behind Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

The study focused particularly on mathematics and science skills. Finland’s neighbour Sweden finished well down the list in 35 position, following serious warnings last week from the OECD of problems in the Swedish education system.

The OECD claims this is the biggest ever ranking of school systems, focusing on school systems across the globe. That’s in contrast to the PISA ranking, which focuses on affluent industrialized countries.
