Finland to Help Greece Fight Forest Fires?

Finland is offering Greece help in putting out the wildfires that have been raging in the country. Three light helicopters and a group of 25 professionals are being readied for dispatch to Greece. Previously the Ministry of the Interior had said that Finland does not have the equipment that Greece had requested.

Greece's Peloponnesian peninsula, south of Athens, has been engulfed by flames fuelled by tinder-dry conditions and spread by strong winds. The Greek government has asked other EU countries to contribute helicopters and aircraft equipped to extinguish wildfires.

The group being offered by Finland includes forest fire experts and fire-fighters. If Greece agrees to accept the offer, the group and equipment will be ready to go at six hours' notice.

Finland is also looking into the possibility of offering its expertise in reforesting the affected areas.
