Finnish Customs announced Thursday that it seized a major cache of amphetamine in an off-road area of Helsinki last summer.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a five-kilogram stash of the stimulant had been concealed in the same area earlier in the summer, but it had been sold in Finland.

The 18-kilograms of drugs had been brought into the country by Lithuanian smugglers, but they were apprehended by Customs. Officials also detained a Finnish man who was caught attempting to retrieve the drugs from its hiding place.

Altogether, officials detained five people in Finland during investigation of the case. The suspects are Finnish and Lithuanian nationals.

The case will now be referred to the Helsinki prosecutors’ office for consideration of charges.
