Estonian-born Jüri Reinvere is composing the opera. He and Oksanen have worked on turning Purge into an opera for several years.
The Estonian National Opera in Tallinn was initially to stage a production of Purge; however, the venture broke down due to a lack of leadership.
Originally staged as a play in Helsinki in 2007, Purge went on to become one of the most successful—and translated—Finnish novels of recent years. It combines the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union with a modern global problem, human trafficking in the Baltic Sea area.
To date, the novel has been published in 14 countries. Plans are also underway to bring Purge to the big screen.
Oksanen was born in 1977 in Jyväskylä to an Estonian mother and Finnish father. She was awarded the prestigious Finlandia Prize in 2008 and the Runeberg Prize in 2009 for Purge. This year she also nabbed the Nordic Council Literature Prize for the novel.
