Finnish Pop Scores Glitzy Showcase

The Finnish pop music industry has landed a prestigious showcase to promote its export acts. Finland has been chosen to host the opening of the world's biggest music industry gathering, Midem, in Cannes, France, next January.

Next winter marks Midem's 40th anniversary. Around 10 Finnish bands and solo artists will perform at the event, attended by 9,000 of the industry's most powerful executives, promoters, retailers and critics. The acts will be chosen by a panel of Finnish and international business insiders. The event will be coordinated by the trade organisation Music Export Finland or Musex. Its director, Paulina Ahokas, says the performers will represent many genres from rock to jazz to folk. She notes that Finland was Europe's number one music exporter last year, according to Billboard magazine. Leading the way were the rock bands The Rasmus, Nightwish and HIM. YLE24
