Detectives from the Counter Terrorism Command unit of the London Metropolitan police have detained a Finnish national at Stansted airport Friday on suspicion of committing offences under the UK's Terrorism Act.

The 19 year-old suspect appeared at the Westminster Magistrates' Court Monday for a remand hearing. The young man is suspected of attempting to travel to Syria by way of the Romanian capital Bucharest, with the intention of joining the terrorist organisation Islamic State.

The suspect has denied the allegations.

The remand hearing began at around noon Finnish time. Police have been tight-lipped about the case and have disclosed no information about the charges being considered.

The London Metropolitan Police website said that the suspect lived in southern London in the Thornton Heath area.
