Finns Lack Enthusiasm for the EU

Finland’s upcoming term as EU president has not sparked enthusiasm for the European Union. According to the newspaper Aamulehti, only 46 percent of Finns would support EU membership if a vote were taken now.

Meanwhile, 45 percent would vote against the measure.

According to Parliament’s Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee Liisa Jaakonsaari, politicians are partly to blame for the negative attitudes Finns have towards the EU. However, she thinks the upcoming presidency will spark Finns' interest in the EU.

The Finnish term as EU president begins on July 1st and runs through the end of the year. YLE24
