Forensic Post Mortems to be Centralised

The National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) is planning to centralise the performing of forensic autopsies across Finland. A lack of qualified pathologists is behind the move.

Until now, forensic autopsies have been carried out in some 20 cities and towns.

By 2015, THL plans to perform post mortems only in the cities of Helsinki, Turku, Oulu, Kuopio and Tampere.

The aim of the move is to reduce the number of forensic autopsies being performed.

Finland faces a long term shortage of qualified forensic pathologists.
