By early Thursday evening, four accidents had been reported as Finns headed en masse to celebrate the Midsummer holiday weekend.

On Highway 8 in Nousiainen, north of Turku, traffic was held up until around 6pm by a three-car pileup. No-one was seriously hurt.

A four-car chain collision took place on a section of Highway 4 in Vantaa where road repairs were underway. No injuries were reported, and cleanup has been completed.

Near Pori, seven people were involved in a two-car wreck on Route 11 on the border of Ulvila and Sastamala.

Also on Highway 8, two cars collided at an intersection in Merikarvia. There were slight injuries and significant delays.

Spots to avoid?

Thursday's traffic is expected to taper off by around 9pm.

Traffic slowdowns are to be expected on Highway 3 around Hämeenlinna, on Highway 4 from Helsinki beyond Lahti and on Highway 9 north of Tampere.

There are lowered speed limits and lane diversions due to bridge repairs on the main routes between the capital region and Turku, Hämeenlinna and Lahti, as well as on Highway 7. Actual repairs are suspended during the holiday weekend.
