Further Delays for Construction of Finland's Fifth Nuclear Reactor

Nuclear consortium Areva-Siemens said on Monday that most of the work on Finland’s fifth nuclear reactor will be ready by 2012. It expects the Olkiluoto 3 reactor to go online in 2013.

“The director told us that most of the work will be completed by the end of 2012. However, it will take a few months to go online, so Olkiluoto 3 will not begin energy production until 2013,” says Jarmo Tanhua, the CEO of Finnish utility TVO.

Previously, officials estimated that the reactor would be completed by the summer of 2012. However, TVO had said earlier that the deadline would not be met. Initially, the reactor was to be finished by the year 2009.

Jouni Silvennoinen, the project director at TVO, says that work has progressed over the spring. For instance, construction work is mostly finished. However, he says that some work like installation of piping has gone more slowly than planned.

”At no stage will we compromise safety or quality,” says Tanhua.
