The accident occurred as the glider plane was being towed with a harness by a regular motorised plane. During the exercise the glider fell to the runway for reasons as yet undetermined.

Eyewitnesses say the glider had ascended somewhat steeply while it was being towed. The operator attempted to correct the angle of ascent, but the vessel hit the runway and rose again before finally crashing into the ground at a 45-degree angle.

The glider operator was said to be a young man resident in Turku, southwest Finland.
