Halonen Hopes for a More United EU

President Tarja Halonen on Tuesday said she wants the European Union to present a more united front in issues of foreign policy.

Speaking to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Halonen said stronger EU efforts could help end conflict in the Middle East. She also said Israeli and Palestinian women should be encouraged to work for peace in the region.

She added that the EU's role in Lebanon is a good example of how the bloc can be a strong international player. Halonen also said that successful enlargement has strengthened the international role of the EU.

Halonen added that she is pleased the EU intends to form a common energy policy. She also emphasised that international security threats, including climate change and disease, are increasingly non-military. Finnish News Agency, APTN
