Halonen Hosts Forum on Arctic Future

President Tarja Halonen is hosting a Presidential Forum on Tuesday focusing on the Arctic region’s present condition and future.

Speakers include Minister of Economic Affairs Mauri Pekkarinen, the chair of the indigenous Finnish Sámi Parliament, Klemetti Näkkäläjärvi, Arctic Ambassador Hannu Halinen and the director of the University of Lapland’s Arctic Centre, Professor Paula Kankaanpää.

Participants include Members of Parliament, researchers, representatives of non-governmental organisations and Northern Finnish leaders. The event is being held at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki.

Since 2006, presidential forums have been arranged on topics ranging from eldercare to tolerance, the state of the Baltic Sea and historical events.

The presidential forum will be webcast live between 10 am and 2 pm on November 23.
