Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) will serve as patron of the Helsinki Pride festival in 2020 and 2021, organisers announced on their website.

This is the first time a Prime Minister has been the patron of the festival.

Marin said in a blog post on the Pride website that this year, for the first time, the rainbow flag would be raised at the premises of the office of the prime minister.

Helsinki Pride is Finland's largest LGBT rights and cultural event. Usually held during the summer, this year it is to take place 7-13 September.

There will be no large parade this year, because of coronavirus restrictions, but there will be an 'online parade' and people will be able to march in small groups on Saturday 12 September.

Discussion events and celebrations will be held through the week, and the overarching theme will be role models.
