Ice Hockey Player Faces Serious Drug Charges

Finnish ice hockey player Jere Karalahti has been slapped with charges of aggravated drug crimes. If found guilty, Karalahti will receive a minimum sentence of one year's imprisonment without parole. The trial will start on January 29 at the Vantaa penitentiary. The charges are part of a wider set of drug-related infringements of the law. Karalahti is suspected of committing the crimes last summer from July 5th to 13th. Police also suspect Karalahti of using cocaine, but charges relating to that were dropped. The charges mean that a suspension imposed by the Finnish Championship League will remain in force. However, he will seek permission to play by applying to the Sports Legal Protection Board. YLE
