By the start of this month, police had investigated 48 cases of the organized smuggling of illegal immigrants this year. NBI Inspector Jukka Martikainen told Turun Sanomat that the numbers are on the rise.
So far this year, officials have confirmed illegal entry by 1,111 people. The figure for the whole of last year was 1,265. According to Martikainen, the situation will become increasingly serious, if officials do not have the funds needed to deal with the rise. He said he fears a ghettoization of immigrants as the numbers outside official control grow.
Inspector Martikainen estimates that the basic fee paid to smugglers by illegal immigrants is between 5,000 and 10,000 euros, but can be as high as 50,000.
Most illegal immigrants enter the country through Tornio on the border with Sweden or through Turku in the south west.
