The court found that Halla-aho's blog writings on Somalis were within the bounds of lawful exaggeration and provocation. Prosecutors previously charged the eccentric political figure with defaming Islam and inciting racial hatred. The Helsinki District Court had fined Halla-aho for defaming religion, but threw out the other charges.

The defamation charges arose out of a blog written by Halla-aho in which he allegedly reviled and defamed the holy institution of Islam. Halla-aho also associated Islam with pedophilia.

Halla-aho was charged with inciting racial hatred on the grounds that he slandered and insulted Somalis in Finland.
