Finland's javelin team at this year's World Athletics Championships has been weakened by the withdrawal through injury of Antti Ruuskanen.
The Pielavesi-born thrower made the decision on Tuesday after a training session in eastern Finland. Together with his coaches he decided that the shoulder was not in good enough shape to carry him to London.
"At this age goals have to be set carefully, even though that might mean a longer break from competition and more emphasis on preparation and training," said Ruuskanen in a statement.
"We're not going to take any risks that might endanger my future as a javelin thrower too much," continued Ruuskanen. "My own career will continue until 2020, and that will be the culmination of my javelin career, the Tokyo Olympics."
Ruuskanen won silver at the London Olympics in 2012, before taking gold at the European Championships in Zurich in 2014 and bronze in the same championships in Amsterdam in 2016.
