Mental health organisation Mieli’s crisis help phone line received a record number of phone calls during July.

There were 36,700 calls made to the line during June and July. In July alone, there were 23,000 phone calls, which is the largest number of phone calls per month ever.

”During the summer holidays and especially in July there were more phone calls than ever before," said Susanna Winter, Mieli’s head of crisis phone services. "Many places that offer support services are closed in the summer, or only open on a limited basis," she said.

The organisation was only able to answer every fifth phone call.

During the summer months, the most common topics from callers were ones regarding relationship problems, as well as the challenges of coping with everyday life. Other concerns included burnout and problems relating to student and working life.
