Keanu Reeves “interested in role” in new Finnish movie

Hollywood star Keanu Reeves is being courted as the possible lead in Finnish director Antti J. Jokinen’s new film The Criminal. The saga shines a light on the grimy underbelly of organized crime in Russia and Finland.

The Hollywood star has already been approached about the role according to Jokinen and Solar Films.

“We are currently in negotiations on the matter. Keanu Reeves is interested in the role,” said producer Markus Selin in an interview with Yle News.

The negotiations with the star of The Matrix were first reported in the film trade magazine Screen Daily.

Stars don't come cheap

Shooting for The Criminal is set to start next year in Helsinki, Dublin and St. Petersburg. The production cost was initially slated for 4 million euros last spring, but now estimates have ballooned to 12 million.

“If you add a star, of course the production costs will rise,” said Selin.

Director Antti J. Jokinen is best known for his Hollywood productions The Resident and the film version of Sofi Oksanen’s award winning book, Purge.
