Liquor Sales Peak Before Christmas

Christmas was once again the peak sales period at state-run ALKO stores.

Sales of beers, wines and spirits increased at the stores by 90 percent in the two weeks prior to the Christmas holiday. Estimates of total sales stand at around 170 million euros.

December accounts for 12 percent of ALKO's annual sales. An estimated 2.5 million customers bought drink from the stores in the pre-Christmas period.

A perennial favourite is red wine with sales totalling 1.4 million litres. Sales of mulled wine in December topped around 760,000 litres. Cognac and brandys sales stood at around 31,000 litres.

Sales of premium grade beers increased by over 200,000 litres in the two weeks prior to Christmas.
