Luther Foundation Ordains Its Own Ministers

Bishop Matti Väisänen of Finland's Luther Foundation ordained four ministers on Saturday. Väisänen himself was stripped of his clerical standing by the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church last summer for accepting appointment as a rogue bishop of the religiously conservative Luther Foundation.

Up until now, the Luther Foundation has ordained clergy only in Sweden.

The four new ministers will serve the Foundation's congregations in Mikkeli, Kokkola, Hämeenlinna and Helsinki. The Luther Foundation, which is opposed to the ordination of women, created its own bishop's post and ordained Väisänen in March. It now employees 15 ministers and there are several more Lutheran ministers who officiate at its services, in addition to serving in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland.

Ministers ordained by the Luther Foundation do not have the right to officiate within the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
