Mauno Koivisto laid to rest in Helsinki

Yle broadcasts Mauno Koivisto's state funeral live across television, radio and online. Spectators are also welcome to attend the event in person.

Ascension Thursday sees the state funeral of President Mauno Koivisto, who was Finland's head of state from 1982 until 1994. The timetable is as follows:

11:30 Helsinki cathedral opens its doors to parishioners and invited guests.

12:50 Live coverage of the funeral begins on Yle's TV1 and on Yle Areena.

12:55 Live broadcast begins on Yle's Radio Suomi.

13:00 Funeral service begins at Helsinki Cathedral, conducted by Bishop Eero Huovinen. President Sauli Niinistö also gives a euology.

14:30 After the funeral service the funeral procession leaves the cathedral and proceeds along the route shown below.

15:00 The procession arrives at Hietaniemi. Koivisto will be buried in the same area of the cemetery as former presidents Risto Ryti and Urho Kekkonen.

16:00 Memorial service at the House of the Estates begins. Speakers include Prime Minister Juha Sipilä and former Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen.
