Deputy chairmanship carries more than symbolic weight as those in the role are often poised to become government ministers.

Sanni Grahn-Laasonen is currently serving as education minister, Antti Häkkänen is the minister of justice while Mari-Leena Talvitie is a NCP parliamentarian from Oulu. The new deputy chairs are all in their 30s.

Party members meanwhile voted EU Commission special adviser Aura Salla in as their new party council chair, beating opponent Heikki Autto, a local NCP Lapland politician, by one vote. Salla and Autto are both 34 years old.

On Saturday finance minister Petteri Orpo was elected for a second term as chair of the National Coalition Party. Running unopposed, Orpo earned a unanimous vote of confidence at the party’s summer congress in Turku.
