Nearly 90 Face Charges over ASEM Riots

Helsinki District Prosecutor Harri Ilander is pressing charges against nearly 90 people involved in a demonstration during the Asia-Europe Meeting last autumn. One of those charged is Paavo Arhinmäki, a Member of Parliament for the Left League Party.

Charges range from violent rioting, violent resistance against an official, illegal use of a mask, as well as weapons offences.

The prosecutor is calling for fines against most of those accused and suspended prison sentences for some. The case will be heard before Helsinki District Court in the autumn.

In addition to the demonstrators, there are investigations going on into the actions of the police, which had been criticised as heavy-handed. The police are being investigated by both the office of the Parliamentary Ombudsman, and the National Bureau of Investigation.
