On Friday, Ollila, 60, said he been asked by the Board to stay on during a transitional period. He said he had agreed but wanted to step down “soon” without specifying a date.

He made that comment at a press conference announcing the company’s appointment of a new CEO, Stephen Elop, 46. The first non-Finn to hold the top job takes over on September 21 from Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo.

Ollila has been Chairman of the Board since 1999.
