Paatero: Police Shooting Justified

Police Commissioner Mikko Paatero says police adhered to rules governing the use of force in the handling of an altercation on Thursday evening in Humppila that led to police shooting a man dead.

Police shot an armed man as he fled from an apartment where he had just shot another man. The perpetrator had failed to respond to police commands and give up his firearm. Police say they shot the gunman since he was endangering general safety. A single bullet was fired into the man’s torso as police did not have clear sight of his extremities.

Police say the man was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and that his weapon was illegal. District prosecutor Tapio Mäkinen is investigating the episode.
