The cause of death of Finnish ski jump legend Matti Nykänen was a protracted inflammation of the pancreas, tabloid daily Ilta-Sanomat reported on Saturday.

The paper said that Nykänen’s siblings confirmed the cause of death. Nykänen passed away suddenly at his home in early February. However in March his death was attributed to pneumonia.

"It’s probably best to confirm this information, because there has been so much speculation about the matter. Unfortunately in Matti’s case, too much had contributed to the illness. I am talking about his alcohol consumption," his sister told the paper.

The multiple winter Olympic medalist was laid to rest in his home town of Jyväskylä in early March.
