PM Lashes Out at "Vague" Criticism

Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen has rejected criticism that his government lacks a coherent foreign or EU policy. He lashed out at his critics, saying their comments are vague and lack any real basis.

"I challenge the opposition to state clearly what they think the government has done wrong," he says. "The criticism has just played with images without offering anything concrete."

Vanhanen accuses the main opposition party the National Coalition of trying to drive a wedge between the government and the president with its criticism. Nonetheless cooperation is excellent, assures Vanhanen.

He also chided his own party for not offering enough support to Minister of Agriculture Juha Korkeaoja during and after the difficult agricultural subsidies reforms put forth by the European Union.

He says that thanks to Korkeaoja, Finland was given exceptions and considerations in the reforms that other countries didn't get.
