Police say there were no major disturbances over the weekend as nearly 600,000 pupils celebrated the end of the school year. More than 60,000 of them graduated from high schools and vocational schools on Saturday.
Police, medical and social workers were out in force that night as warm weather drew large crowds of often-intoxicated youngsters to gather outdoors. Officials say it was a busy night but no significant problems were reported.
On Sunday an estimated 15,000 people, mostly young, converged on Helsinki's Kaisaniemi Park for the traditional start to the summer rock festival season, a free outdoor show hosted the YleX radio channel. Featured were Finnish pop stars such as Mariko and Ari Koivunen.
The show was also the kick-off for YleX's annual safe-sex awareness campaign, the biggest of its kind in the country. The station and its partners will hand out information and more than 180,000 condoms this summer. The concert will be broadcast on YLE's Teema TV channel next Saturday.
