At least one police officer is suspected of taking part in preparations for carrying out a serious crime against the life or health of one or more individuals, according to Heikki Stenius of Finland's National Prosecution Authority.
The case is part of criminal investigation announced by the National Bureau of Investigation last week. The bureau confirmed on Friday that it has an ongoing investigation into preparations to commit violent crimes by suspects with far-right leanings.
According to Stenius, the police officer under investigation is not currently in custody. Stenius added that, following measures taken during the preliminary investigation, the threat of a crime being carried out is low. The National Bureau of Investigation says that preventative measures have been taken against just fewer than ten suspects.
While Stenius did not comment on the background of the police officer under investigation, media reports say that the officer, now suspended from duty, has been employed as a sergeant by the Helsinki Police Department. However, this was still unconfirmed as of Monday afternoon.
Government minister not targeted
Finland's commercial MTV News originally reported last week that Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo (Green) and Prosecutor General Raija Toiviainen were the targets of the plan being investigated.
According to Stenius, neither Ohisalo or Toiviainen have come up in any line of inquiry surrounding this investigation. The National Bureau of Investigation has also said that its investigation has not revealed any concrete threat to the Minister of the Interior or the Prosecutor General.
