Police suspect arson in Espoo school fire

A fire was detected at the Kirsti School in the metropolitan city of Espoo at 11 pm Saturday night when a passerby noticed smoke rising from the building. Police now suspect the empty school - slated for extensive renovation - was intentionally set ablaze.

Rescue Services responded to a report of a fire at the Kirsti primary school in the Suvela district of Espoo shortly after 11pm on Saturday evening. Several units were required to put out the blaze.

"The building was empty, as there were plans to completely renovate the premises. The fire was burning in several locations, which leads us to believe that it was started deliberately. We are conducting preliminary investigations, and no one has been taken into custody," the Western Uusimaa Police Department's Inspector Lauri Hakkala told the news agency STT.

The fire did not pose a threat, although it did create a strong cloud of smoke in the surrounding residential area.
