A new poll by news consortium Uutissuomalainen shows strong support for taxing vehicles based on usage rather than taxing the purchase price.

Just under half of respondents (47 percent) said "Yes" to the question, "Do you think that vehicle taxation should be shifted from [a tax on] the purchase price to a more usage-based model?"

One-third of respondents said "No" to the question and the others said they did not know.

According to the poll there was more support for basing vehicle taxation on usage rather than purchase price in Helsinki and other parts of southern Finland, compared to other less populous parts of the country.

Additionally, more men than women said that they supported the idea of a usage-based rather than a price-based tax.

The survey of 1,000 respondents was conducted for Uutissuomalainen by research firm Tietoykkönen from 16 - 18 June. The margin of error was +/- 3.1 percentage points.
