Port of Helsinki: Record 10.9 million passengers in 2014

Despite the economic downturn in many sectors of the Finnish economy, the Port of Helsinki saw a record number of passengers – almost 11 million last year. Almost 11 million tonnes of cargo also passed through the port, representing an 8 percent increase in exports over 2013.

The neighbouring city of Tallinn is still the most popular destination for travellers departing from Helsinki, with three quarters of all passenger trips made destined for the Estonian capital.

A new Port of Helsinki record was made in passenger traffic in 2014 with the Finnish capital’s ports being used by 10.9 million travellers, a 2 percent increase over the previous year.

International cruise ship traffic was also up, with close to 8,000 cruise liners visiting Helsinki and bringing 420,000 travellers to the city.

Cargo traffic rose to 10.8 million tonnes in 2014, which represented a three percent increase over 2013.

The breakdown for cargo saw 4.8 million tonnes of imports and 5.2 million tonnes of exports. In total, exports grew by 8 percent in 2014 compared to the previous year.
