President Calls for Finns to Join Aid Effort

Finnish President Tarja Halonen has expressed condolences to those who have lost loved ones and are suffering otherwise as a result of the Asian catastrophe.

In a televised address on Thursday afternoon, she said the nation should prepare itself for a growing Finnish death toll. By that point Finnish officials had only confirmed the death of four Finns. However some 200 remained missing in Thailand and elsewhere.

The president extended gratitude and support to all those working to help the victims. She said she was closely monitoring the situation along with the government and other officials.

Halonen called on Finns to join together to help the victims of the catastrophe.
