President Sauli Niinistö travels to the United States on Thursday in a week-long visit during which he's expected to attend the annual autumn opening of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

On Monday, Niinistö will meet UN Secretary General António Guterres and participate in a meeting on UN reforms to be chaired by US President Donald Trump. He will also address a high-level meeting on preventing sexual abuse. Niinistö has also joined the Secretary General’s Circle of Leadership, an initiative in which heads of state commit to combating abuse.

During the UN visit, Niinistö will be the head of the Finnish delegation to the General Assembly. Other delegates are Foreign Minister Timo Soini and Foreign Trade and Development Minister Kai Mykkänen.

General Assembly address, high-level meetings

Next Tuesday, Niinistö will attend the opening of the General Assembly and will join French President Emmanuel Macron to host another high-level meeting that will look at an initiative for a global environment agreement. During the evening, Niinistö will be joined by his wife Jenni Haukio, for a reception hosted by the US President.

On Wednesday the President will deliver an address on behalf of Finland at the UN General Assembly. He will also adopt the role of main speaker at a meeting on the role of citizens in preventing climate change. The meeting is part of New York City’s Climate Week, a series of events organised by the Climate Group since 2009.

Before the New York leg of the trip, Niinistö and Jenni Haukio will travel to Washington where they will participate in a gala celebrating Finland’s independence centennial at the Finnish Embassy on Saturday. Niinistö will also meet with US senators during his time in the US capital.

After their time in New York, the presidential couple will visit Minnesota in Minneapolis – where many migrant Finns settled in the 1800s and early 1900s — as part of the centennial celebrations.
