Prosecutor Demands Sentence for Man Who Threatened Politicians

A state prosecutor is seeking a suspended sentence for a man who made online threats against former Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and Finance Minister Jyrki Katainen. The man says he posted the threats on an impulse after watching parliamentary question time on television.

The application for summons reveals that the man had also threatened to blow up the Parliament buildings. The prosecutor Jorma Kalske said that the man's text gave Vanhanen, Katainen and Parliamentary staff members reason to fear that their lives might be in danger.

According to the prosecutor, such threats to prominent politicians as well as the Parliament were grave offences, as these could undermine freedom of opinion and speech.

Vanhanen and Katainen had not themselves asked for charges to be brought against the man. The maximum punishment for the offence is two years of imprisonment. The verdict will be given on January 4.
