Retretti Art Centre Closing

The Retretti Art Centre in Punkaharju, located in eastern Finland, is ceasing its operations. The centre, which is being liquidated, laid off its employees on Friday.

Retretti's board is basing the decision on increased costs, and because its main financier, Nordea Bank, is withdrawing its support.

The company's managing director said that last summer's profits were good but could not save the centre from its economic problems.

Since 1983, Retretti has been one of the largest art centres in the Nordic region, displaying national and international exhibitions in unique underground galleries. It had been planning an exhibition of Marc Chagall's work for next summer.
