Michael Penttilä, known as the ’serial strangler’, has been charged with murder. The case will come before Helsinki District Court on 10 July.

Police say Penttilä has admitted to strangling a woman to death in her flat on Vaasankatu in Helsinki’s Alppiharju neighbourhood last April.

He has been in custody since 9 May on suspicion of murder.

The 52-year-old has already been convicted of three homicides and a string of other violent crimes. In late May, an appeals court sentenced him to two and a half years in prison for plotting to strangle a 17-year-old girl.
