Top award for Karita Mattila

Opera News, published in the United States, has given one of its annual awards to Finnish soprano Karita Mattila. The magazine described her as one of the four best singers in the world.

Opera News wrote that Mattila recently opened a New York Metropolitan Opera season in Puccini's "Tosca," broadcast live to movie theaters worldwide in high definition.

This was the seventh year the magazine honoured opera stars. In addition to Mattila, awards were also presented to opera director Peter Sellars, the Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, German soprano Anja Silja and baritone Peter Mattei.

Earlier recipients include Placido Domingo and Kiri Te Kanawa.
