The trial of a father suspected of stabbing his three-year-old daughter to death in Porvoo began on Monday. The prosecutor is seeking a life sentence for the man - a French citizen from the Caribbean - who is accused of murder, assault, child abduction, illegal threats and trespass.
The 38-year-old man reportedly abducted the child when her mother was putting her in the family car and stabbed her in a public park in November last year. The daughter was taken to hospital by helicopter but succumbed to her injuries.
The suspect has previously admitted to causing his daughter's death, but rejects the murder charge, according to the court documents.
The parents were in the midst of a custody battle at the time of the daughter's death, and the mother had sought a restraining order against the father.
