The Southwest Finland District court has ordered a psychiatric evaluation of Abderrahman Bouanane, the man suspected of a deadly knife attack in Turku in August, the daily Helsingin Sanomat reported Thursday.
According to the court, the suspect, 22-year-old Abderrahman Bouanane requested the assessment.
The Moroccan national had previously admitted to killing two women and injuring eight other people during the attack on August 18, but denied having any terrorist intent.
Finnish police are investigating the case as a terrorist act.
Lead investigator Olli Töyräs of the National Bureau of Investigation told HS that the suspect’s defence team had requested a mental health assessment during the early stages of the investigation. He said that neither the police nor the prosecutor had opposed the suggestion at the time.
