Water Chlorination Begins in Nokia

The town of Nokia will begin high-potency chlorination of its water distribution system from Wednesday. The special treatment will begin in the Koskenmäki and Kartano districts. On Thursday, the southern part of Turuntie, and the Sorva and Tottijärvi districts will be treated. Chlorination in the districts of Haavisto and Harjunniity begins Sunday evening. It's estimated that each operation will last one day. In order for the chlorination to be effective, each building must run water from all faucets daily. In total, each property should use about 50 litres of water per household. "It will be sufficient if water is run for about a minute daily from each faucet, for a total of about five minutes per property. Toilets should also be flushed. When running the tap, both cold and warm water should be used," says water expert Esko Haume. Information will be distributed to residents in affected districts. Persons offering advice will also visit the areas. During the operation, the chlorine component of the water supply will be increased to nearly 10 milligrams per litre. Chlorination is an effective method of purifying water to prevent the spread of disease. Nokia's water supply was contaminated by treated sewage in a mishap late last year. YLE
